Chronic diseases account for the largest percentage of Jefferson County’s mortality rates. In 2010 heart disease, strokes, and diabetes were ranked 1st, 4th, and 6th as the county’s leading causes for deaths. These rankings mirror national numbers and represents the busy and sedentary lifestyle sweeping the nation contributing to the rise in chronic diseases. These numbers clearly show that there is a need for increased focus on nutrition and physical education in our community.
